HISTORY OF THE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF MONROE COUNTY
The Genealogical Society of Monroe County held its founding meeting on June 30, 1977. However, a series of eight genealogical workshops sponsored by the Monroe County Library System and the Monroe County Historical Museum had been held in 1975-76 and again in 1976-77. In early June, 1977, a small group of individuals met to lay the groundwork and write the by-laws for the society and the GSMC came into existence. The group was subsequently invited to join the Michigan Genealogical Council and held its first seminar on September 10, 1977. Some of the early activities of the society included participation in the Old Frenchtown Days festivals in Monroe and the compiling of the history of the early German settlers of Monroe County.
In 2002, the GSMC celebrated its 25th anniversary and held its annual seminar on April 13, 2002 at Monroe County Community College.
The GSMCs membership has remained steady with 150 members as of 2006. Attendance at the monthly meetings averages 35 members and guests. The annual seminar has averaged 180 participants over the past ten years. Publication of census, birth, marriage and death books continues with several members taking an active part in these projects.
